First Baptist Church of Las Cruces was organized in 1899. Initially, the body met in homes and then in rented buildings. At first, pastors would come from El Paso or Albuquerque by train and walk from the nearby depot over to the church site. However, in 1913 an abandoned Methodist Episcopal Church at the corner of Organ and Miranda Streets was purchased. At that point, the members organized a Sunday School, Junior Baptist Young People’s Union, a Woman’s Missionary Union, and a Young Women’s Association. In addition, the group installed a baptistery and purchased a parsonage. The first baptistry was built in the center of the worship platform and it was covered when not in use. The water had to be pumped by hand a delivered by a bucket brigade. Water was removed in the same manner. |
